IN CAMERON ROAD ON KOWLOON SIDE   ©A.W Ward 2009

In Cameron Road on Kowloon side I saw myself and knew

That all of those I’d loved so well were traceless, sad but true.

They’d blown like the smoke of ancient fires across the China Sea;

Across the waves, above the clouds, to where they had to be.

The eyes well up and tears are fought but a man must understand

That time is still a moving thing that his thoughts cannot command.

And the memory is a library, every page eternal there.

You can drink your fill from that soundless well

And there’s always much to spare.

We scaled the wall up to Signal Hill with chestnuts in a bag.

We took the bad ones when they came and we threw them at the flag

‘til that cop came round with his moon-faced frown and chased us to the street,

Where we ran like hell through that human swell; through the markets and the feet.

On those walks to school I would act the fool in my first mad rush of love.

Her dark swaying hair in the humid air and her hips in pleats they’d move.

As I walked with her I would often dare to touch her hand and flee.

And to this day I could never say what her smile was worth to me.

In Cameron Road on Kowloon side and it’s past noon in my years.

I can see the shadows lengthening. I can feel the shift of gears.

Did we all do what we had to do? Did we find our way somehow?

I see all the junks have sailed away, and so must we for now.

HART CRANE JUMPED                © A.W. Ward 1997-2007

Hart Crane jumped into the sea just like that

 And was never seen again

 What courage it takes to disappear

 What courage it takes to remain

 When all your bitter weeds grow tall

Better that a man should love his own work

 Than to long  for the wealth or the prize.

 What vision it takes to craft in the dark;

 What joy for the hands and the eyes

 When all you are is more than all.

 Hart Crane wrote in the land of the free

In the empty heart of night

 Of hopes, regrets and promises;

 Of girders, beams and light

 Behind the painting lies the wall

Hart Crane stood at the stern of his life

 And the harbour of his heart called him home.

 The tide was right and the compass and bell

 Sang him into the gathering foam

 To leave his shadow on the sea
